Balance
The ability to maintain a controlled body position during task performance — sitting, walking, climbing.
What Is Balance?
Balance is the ability to maintain a controlled body position during task performance — sitting, walking, climbing, or any sustained activity. It is foundational to all childhood learning and development.
Static vs. Dynamic Balance
Static balance is the ability to hold a position without moving — sitting upright at a desk, standing in line. Dynamic balance is the ability to maintain stability while moving — walking down the hall, climbing stairs, transitioning between activities.
Why It Matters in the Classroom
When the vestibular system is unstable, the body has to work harder to stay upright. That work pulls energy and attention away from what the child is supposed to be learning. Sitting, focusing, processing instructions, and integrating new information all become more effortful.
